Wireless Roaming used to be a costly affair for consumers earlier. For the carriers it was the ultimate gold mine. However the situation is different now because of the cut throat competition as more choices are available now. This means that wireless roaming has allowed for concessions which have not been made in the past to attract consumers.
However wireless roaming is one area where the carriers are still making a fast buck without passing on the entire advantage to the consumers. Wireless roaming fees quickly add up when one is using the network which is outside one's carrier.
Now FCC has imposed new wireless roaming rules wherein the carrier has to provide consumers access to data on roaming on terms and conditions that are commercially viable. This will reduce costs incurred for connecting broadband lines and wireless antennas to utility poles across the state.

Some mobile operators have been making it difficult for people to use data services while roaming on their networks. This has prompted the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to work on developing a rule that would require carriers to negotiate reasonable deals with other operators in order to provide seamless roaming calls and data for consumers.

An order by the FCC would require operators to offer data roaming arrangements with other carriers on commercially reasonable terms and conditions, and there is ample evidence that a rule is necessary given that operators have been reluctant to negotiate data roaming agreements. One of the Commission's primary concerns is that the transition to LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks will put the basic voice roaming rules in jeopardy, as they will no longer ensure automatic voice roaming due to transmission of voice calls using VOIP over LTE, classifying voice as a data service.

Many iPhone users complain of excessively high
mobile international roaming charges for data. This has prompted a number of users to resort to simply switching off the data roaming feature on their iPhones whenever they are traveling overseas. While this is one way of saving money off international data roaming charges, it can certainly be inconvenient especially for iPhone users who like to have the freedom to check their emails, surf the web and update their Facebook status even while they are overseas.

In fact, international travelers are more likely to need the data roaming feature because with it they can keep in contact with friends and family back at home, and they can have constant access to information on the world wide web which can help them navigate the streets of the foreign land. Therefore, it may be better for iPhone users to simply look for mobile international roaming providers who have the cheapest rates, rather than foregoing the roaming feature altogether.
